Commitment to Sustainability at the Barcelona Marathon
The Zurich Barcelona Marathon is proud to be an event that not only celebrates effort and personal achievement but also respect for the environment. As we move towards a more sustainable future, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our race by adopting initiatives that promote sustainability at every step. Below, we share the actions we are implementing to make this marathon a greener and more responsible event:
To facilitate access to the Barcelona Marathon and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation, we encourage the use of public transport. Participants and attendees will benefit from a free ride on TMB (Barcelona Metropolitan Transport), including the metro, buses, and trams, promoting a more efficient and less polluting way of traveling. This initiative helps minimize traffic and emissions, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable city. Additionally, during the Expo days, there will be a supervised bicycle parking service, encouraging personal transportation by bike as an ecological and practical option.
As part of our commitment to waste reduction and the circular economy, the official Zurich Barcelona Marathon T-shirts are made from reusable materials, ensuring quality and sustainability in their production.
The finisher bag is an essential item for all participants, but in our ongoing effort to reduce plastic use, we have designed a reusable bag. In addition to being practical for carrying personal items, this bag is intended to be useful in daily life, helping to prevent unnecessary waste. We have also introduced a participant bag, given out at the Expo, which follows the same principles of sustainability and reuse, ensuring that all materials are environmentally friendly.
As part of our commitment to waste reduction, the cups used at refreshment stations will be compostable, turning into a single easily recyclable waste. This minimizes environmental impact and promotes the use of biodegradable materials.
To protect the health of participants, residents, and urban wildlife, we have implemented a sound limiter at the start and finish lines. This system ensures that the noise levels generated by the speakers do not exceed the limits set by local regulations, creating a healthier and more respectful environment.
All generators used at the start and finish of the Zurich Barcelona Marathon are electric, significantly reducing pollutant emissions. The other generators used during the race operate with fuels that do not produce CO₂, ensuring a lower environmental impact throughout the event.
In summary, the Barcelona Marathon is not just a top-level sporting event but also a commitment to sustainability and environmental respect. Through these and many other initiatives, we hope to continue progressing towards a greener race, promoting environmental awareness among all participants.
