With just two months to go until the race, the volume of participation has already improved compared to last year and is on the way to recovering pre-pandemic participation figures, with the prospect of exceeding 15,000 registrations for this 44th edition. In addition, the Barcelona Marathon is also recovering its large number of runners from all over the world. In 2023, it is estimated that more than half of the participants, 55%, will be international, which certifies that the pandemic is being left behind and that Barcelona is the place chosen by many people to live an unforgettable experience by completing the 42.195km. |
The Barcelona circuit runs through the heart of a cosmopolitan city, with the great modernist legacy of Antonio Gaudí or the Pla Sardà, the Camp Nou, Plaza España, the Arc de Triomf or the Forum and the Front Marítim as some of its main tourist attractions, and it does so in an entirely urban way and with a circuit that was renovated in 2018, flatter and faster. Likewise, the Zurich Marató Barcelona is the only marathon in Spain and one of only three national races with the IAAF Gold Label, along with the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona and the Trinidad Alfonso Valencia Half Marathon. “We are back to the usual dates for our Zurich Marató Barcelona and everything indicates that this year it will also be stronger than ever. It has become an international benchmark for marathons and we hope that people will fill the streets to cheer and give strength to all the participants of this great sporting event”, said David Escudé, Sports Councillor of the Barcelona City Council. |
One of the fastest marathons in Europe Its climate, its culture, its monuments and a long athletics tradition going back more than 40 years make the Catalan capital an ideal city for running a marathon. And the times achieved by the elite athletes in 2022 in this race show that it is also one of the fastest to-do so. The time of Yihunilign Adane (2:05:53), winner of the last edition of the Zurich Marató Barcelona, is among the TOP-50 international best marathon times in 2022 by World Athletics. Therefore, this year’s goal is to lower the current record of the race to 02:04:00h in order to continue to be among the 10 fastest marathons in Europe and the world. In the same way, the time of the current winner in Barcelona, Meseret Gebre Dekebo (02:23:11), also entered the 2022 World Top-100 at this distance. These times are largely due to the fact that the course of the Zurich Marató Barcelona is one of the most spectacular in the world, and at the same time it has been designed to provide a magical and agile experience in equal parts. |
